A residency for thinking
The Centre for Applied Imagination is a Qatar-wide programme of Qatar Museums for interdisciplinary research, experimentation and production.
Vision
A Qatar where people from every field imagine, test and build what comes next, together.
The questions that matter most now sit between fields: how we imagine, learn, work, stay well and make culture as technology grows more capable. Specialists rarely meet there, and institutions are seldom built to bring them together.
When people with deep expertise in different fields work side by side on a shared question, with time, tools and permission to fail, each sees what the others cannot. Depth, crossed deliberately and given time, becomes new capability.
Mission
CAI brings together specialists from the arts, sciences, technology, humanities, craft and public life to work on questions that no single discipline can answer, above all how we live, learn and imagine as technology changes faster than our institutions.
CAI hosts residencies, invites guest voices and supports collaborations across Qatar's museums, heritage sites, laboratories and communities. Each project begins with a question rather than a discipline or a brief. CAI gives participants time, access to collections, expertise and tools, and the freedom to experiment and to fail, and it sees the strongest ideas through to lasting outcomes, from artworks and prototypes to curricula, public conversations, new knowledge and policy.
CAI seeks to cultivate deep expertise and to make it cross: to protect and expand human imagination, to build capability that remains in Qatar, and to place Qatar and the Arab world among the authors of the technologies and cultures now taking shape.
Manifesto
- We begin with questions no single field can answer.
The questions that matter most now, how we learn, heal, remember, belong, and live alongside the technologies we build, are human questions. Science alone cannot answer them. Neither can culture, or machines.
- So we bring unusual suspects together.
An artist and a clinician. A philosopher and an engineer. A craftsperson and a data scientist. A teacher, a policymaker, a community. People who would rarely share a room, working as equals on one question.
- Depth, crossed.
We ask specialists to go deep together. Each discipline keeps its rigour; CAI gives it room to meet another, and something new grows where they cross.
- Imagination is a practical tool.
It lets us see what systems alone cannot, and test what does not yet exist. We apply it to real places, real institutions and real problems across Qatar.
- People come first.
Technology widens what is possible; people give it meaning. We use whatever tools the work needs, and we are defined by none of them.
- We experiment, and we expect to fail sometimes.
Experimentation needs uncertainty. Learning that something does not work is also a result.
- What we start, we see through.
A new work or a new tool. A curriculum, a public conversation, a policy recommendation. New skills in new hands. We choose a few questions each year and stay with them, so that what is learned here stays here and keeps growing.
- We are not a building. We are a way of working.
CAI moves through museums, heritage sites, studios, labs, hospitals and schools, wherever a question needs testing. It is a residency for thinking: it begins by invitation, and over time it will open to anyone with an idea worth imagining further.
The future is not something we enter. It is something we make, here, together.
Core values
Curiosity
We begin with questions we cannot yet answer, and we follow them across whatever boundaries they cross.
Depth
We value expertise. We invite people who lead in their fields and protect the rigour each discipline brings.
Exchange
We work across fields as equals, and we create the conditions for methods, languages and ideas to pass between them.
Experiment
We give people time, tools and permission to test and to fail, and we treat what doesn't work as knowledge.
Humanity
We put people before technology, and we judge every tool by what it does for the people who use it.
Plurality
We draw on many cultures, languages and forms of knowledge, so that Qatar and the Arab world help author the future, not only inherit it.
Legacy
We see our work through. Every project plans how it will build capacity, make an impact and remain in Qatar after it ends.
How CAI works
Time on one question
Residents spend time and experiment on one question, alone or in mixed teams, hosted by a museum, heritage site, lab or studio. Two core residencies a year.
Residency →Guest voices
Leading thinkers visit for public conversations, workshops and exchanges, one guest at a time, in four moments.
Being Human →Across institutions
Museums and partners run interdisciplinary work under CAI. CAI brings the method, the connections and the visibility.
Projects →Tools for the work
Lab space and partner technologies, from fabrication to immersive media, that residencies and collaborations can use. The lab serves the questions.
Our home
Rooted in Qatar. Open to the world.
CAI works across Qatar's museums, heritage sites, studios, laboratories and communities. Drawing on local knowledge and global perspectives, it creates opportunities for new ideas to emerge and grow.
